For clothing, you can't beat leather. Wheather you choose the basic "biker" jacket or a brown "bomber" or sheepskin or whatever, leather is still the best. Leather gloves (thin unlined in warm weather and lined ones when cold) are a must, even when you don't wear a jacket. If you're in an accident it's instinct to put your hands out to break your fall. Gloves can be replaced, skin can't. Boots of whatever style you like are also good. Protection from weather, bugs, rocks, and heat (just in case your foot is caught under the exhaust pipe in a fall). Denim jeans are also "standard equipment" even when it's hot (listen up Knud).
As far as helmets go, I wear mine when I feel like it. I wear it when it's cold or windy. I prefer to ride bare headed but that's up to the individual as far as I'm concerned. Wearing a helmet is safer than not, but driving a car is safer than riding a bike and a tank is safer than a car and never leaving your house is safer still. Life without risk is not life. If you want to ride with a hat, ride with a hat.
If your "Harley friends" kid you about your hat, tell them to stuff it, they don't have the true "Harley spirit" - Freedom of Choice.
Ride free.
